묘지토끼협회

미국에는 묘지토끼협회(The Association Of Graveyard Rabbits)라는 특별한 단체가 있습니다. 주로 묘지 및 묘비의 역사적 중요성에 대한 연구 및 탐사활동, 묘지로 알아보는 가족의 역사, 묘지보존 등의 다양한 활동을 펼치고 있습니다.

온라인상의 블로그와 소셜커머스 위주로 활동을 하고 있으며, 간행물 제작과 토론회 등을 개최하는 순수 친목단체로 미국뿐 아니라 영국, 캐나다, 네덜란드 등에서도 활동을 하고 있습니다. 회원은 자신이 거주하는 지역 인근의 묘지에 대한 사진과 정보 등을 블로그에 포스팅한 후 서로의 내용을 교류하며 활동하게 됩니다. 

삶과 죽음이 같은 시간과 공간속을 서로 왕래하며 '나타났다가는 감추어지는 것'일 뿐이고, 그것을 자연스럽게 알려주는 장소가 '묘지'임을 이 묘지토끼협회는 회원들간의 교류활동으로 증명하고, 자연스럽게 깨닫게 해주고 있습니다.

묘지토끼라는 이름은 미국의 시인 Frank Lebby Stanton(1857-1927)의 시 The Graveyard Rabbit에서 따온 것으로, 시의 내용은 묘지토끼에 대한 미신에 빗대어 죽은자들에 대한 사랑과 연민을 노래한 것이라고 합니다.

The black man creeps, when the night is dim,  

Fearful, still, on the track of him;  

Or fleetly follows the way he runs,  

For he heals the hurts of the conjured ones.

For they plot him ill;  

The soul’s bewitched that would find release,—  

To the graveyard rabbit go for peace!  

 

He holds their secret—he brings a boon          

Where winds moan wild in the dark o’ the moon;  

And gold shall glitter and love smile sweet  

To whoever shall sever his furry feet!
